Who is Cosmo?

Growing awareness

By 2000, Patrice had become a family man, with two daughters and a son, and was increasingly concerned about the environment and biodiversity issues. Worried about his children’s future, he decided to create a character whose goal would be to support and stimulate young people in their reflection on the challenges that will face them in the future. Today’s children will be responsible for shaping tomorrow’s society.

But who could this character be?

Meeting the dodo bird

The author-illustrator began searching for an animal that would inspire him. He came upon a strange bird, the dodo, and the interesting name caught his attention. Knowing nothing about this animal, Patrice read up on it and discovered a fascinating and unique species, despite its tragic fate. Raphus cucullatus, commonly known as the dodo, disappeared from the face of the Earth approximately 300 years ago. This bird species could only be found on the island of Mauritius, an earthly paradise, and had no predators. The dodo survived unthreatened in its Garden of Eden for thousands of years. During this time, its wings gradually atrophied, transforming it into a flightless bird.

One day, sailors landed on Mauritius. A fearless species, the dodos rushed out to meet the humans. The famished men jumped at the opportunity to fill their bellies! The ship brought not only people, but dogs and rats as well, who devoured the eggs of the legendary bird. Within only one hundred years of the dodo country’s invasion, the species had become extinct.

Creating Cosmo

Inspired by his findings about dodos, Patrice got to work. His sketches gradually gave life to the ideal spokesperson for biodiversity and the environment. The creator decided that the historical character’s mission would not only consist of entertaining children, but also urging them to reflect on their world and their future. This is how Patrice created Cosmo, the last of the dodo birds.

“Nowadays, thanks to the educational system and information available to us, young people are aware of environmental and biodiversity issues. It’s one of their superpowers and part of their DNA. It is our duty as adults to nourish and develop this strength so that our young people can grow to change the world. Let’s offer them the tools they need to succeed today.”
